2 Week Getcha Booty Back in Shape Challenge

I am not even going to try denying to myself that I’ve been, let’s say, “enjoying myself” a bit too much these past couple weeks. I’ve enjoyed a few too many adult beverages and eaten out more than I usually do. I’m still exercising pretty regularly, but I fear that this is not making up for everything else.

SO, I deem these next two weeks at home my Getcha Booty Back in Shape Challenge. I love cooking for the fam when I’m home, so hopefully I’ll be less tempted to eat poorly. Turkey burgs, tacos, and tequila… It’s been fun, but I think we need a break.

Problem Number One: I no longer have access to a gym, but hopefully the weather will cooperate with me enough to take my runs outside. I also hope to acquaint myself with Victor Yoga Studio on multiple occasions these next couple weeks.

Workout Plan:

    • Run 4 days per week
    • Yoga 1-2 days per week
    • Strength train 2 days per week

Nutrition

    • Eat out no more than 2 times per week
    • Alcohol no more than 1-2 times per week (I’m going to aim for 1, but we’ll see…)
    • Cook and eat lots of veggies, whole grains, and fruits!

It’s really easy for me to eat healthy when I cook for myself, because I’m really careful about what I put into my food, and I honestly enjoy and prefer healthy nutritious foods as opposed to processed, greasy crap.

I finished off the Sea Salt dark chocolate bar tonight. I had never tried this kind before and I wasn’t sure how I would feel about salty chocolate, but boy were my taste buds in for a pleasant surprise.

The Florestine Collection

Last night, my friend Molly and I went to a viewing of a film called The Florestine Collection. This short 30 minute film takes you through the lives of a filmmaker named Helen Hill, her husband, and their baby, following their move to New Orleans. One day Helen finds some old dresses in a dumpster, deems them “treasure,” and decides to make a film about them. Tragedy hits in the form of Hurricane Katrina, forcing the young family to move back to Helen’s hometown of Columbia, SC temporarily. Eventually, they return to New Orleans, manage to repair the damage done to the dresses and film, and continue on with their lives… Until tragedy Number 2 hits. Helen is shot to death by an intruder. Her husband who is holding on to their baby is also shot, but manages to survive. He takes it upon himself to finish what Helen had started, hence The Florestine Collection.

The viewing of this abstract film felt very personal, as the audience was small and included Helen’s parents who raised her in Columbia. After the film ended, we enjoyed complimentary wine and treats. A table was set up for decorating your own dress-shaped cookies, so Molly and I took it upon ourselves to help clear the table. We each decorated a cookie… then ate it right after, not taking very long to admire our artwork.

I love getting out and doing different things every now and then. Molly is a PR major and always hears about these fun little outings. We were probably the one two people there under the age of 40, but I had an awesome time and really enjoyed the film.

turning 21 is bad news, baby

View album

Thus far, turning 21 has sparked a pattern of days of health-related misbehavior followed by days of self-torture. I will be nothing short of a big ol’ ball of fun then spend the next day trying to make up for it. Because I will NOT fall victim to the post-21 gain. Nope, not if I have to run to the moon and back every day to avoid it (that was a joke, you can laugh now.)

I have also {already} developed a new-found love for beer. And I’m not talking the 64-calorie watered-down crap that they advertise on TV. Naturally I like the heavy, full-flavored stuff. Pass me the porters and stouts please! I have enough self discipline to know that this won’t affect me in epic proportions, but it is definitely going to take a conscious effort.

I think that it’s the combination of turning 21, being {almost} done with classes, and the sun beckoning me out to the pool every day that has caused me to be a little more lackadaisical about exercising. I’m confident it will soon pass and I will get back into my regimen, so for now… Cheers!

Healthy “Fast Food” Awards

“Fast food” is taking a turn for the better. It is no longer (necessarily) associated with grease, fat, and god-knows-what-that-is. Restaurants such as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s still have quite a ways to go, but it seems that everyone is at least putting in an effort.

Here is a list of my go-to fast food restaurants for when I’m traveling, out of food, or simply don’t feel like cooking. Like all fast food, they must be enjoyed in moderation; it is always better to cook for yourself, so you can see exactly what goes into what you are eating, but clearly some options are better than others.

1. Panera Bread

image

This restaurant really caters to its health-conscious customers by listing the calories for just about every item right on the menu board. The You-Pick-Two option allows you to customize your meal with a large selection of soups, salads, and sandwiches from which to choose. Their website also has a Nutrition Calculator that allows you to add multiple items and view all of the nutrition information for your entire meal.

My Favorite Options:

    • 1/2 BBQ Chopped Chicken Salad (250 calories)
    • 1/2 Thai Chopped Chicken Salad (200 calories)
    • 1/2 Asian Sesame Chicken Salad (200 calories)
    • Cup of Low-Fat Vegetarian Black Bean Soup (110 calories)
    • Cup of Low-Fat Garden Vegetable Soup (110 calories)
    • 1/2 Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich (300 calories)

2. Subway

image

When all else fails, there’s almost always a Subway somewhere close by for me to get my veggie sub fix. With options for whole wheat bread and all the vegetables your heart can handle, you can’t go wrong. I always order the Veggie Delight with low-fat honey mustard dressing, usually topped with swiss cheese and toasted. You can get all this in a foot-long for just over 500 calories. Subway also posts their nutrition information on the menu for all of their basic sandwiches.

3. Starbuck’s

image

While some items on the Starbuck’s menu are dietary disasters, there are tons of healthy, low-cal options as well.

Drinks

    • Grande Mocha Light Frappuccino (140 calories)
    • Chocolate Vivanno Smoothie (270 calories)
    • Grande Soy Latte (170 calories)
    • Grande Skinny Latte (170 calories)
    • Unsweetened Iced Green Tea (0 calories)

Food

    • Turkey Bacon, Egg White, Cheddar Breakfast Sandwich (320 calories)
    • Spinach, Tomato, Feta, Egg Wrap (280 calories)
    • Perfect Oatmeal (140-390 calories)

My 21st Birthday

I had so much fun for my 21st birthday and was really glad I got to have my parents there to help me celebrate. My mom and I went to get manicures at Occo Skin Studio in the morning and then we all had lunch at a restaurant called Mediterranean Tea Room. They gave us SO much food and I’m pretty sure I came home with more food than we actually ate at the restaurant. My dad and I shared a greek salad and a vegetarian plate, which came with falafel, hummus, feta cheese, and tabouli salad.

105_2394105_2396

After lunch, we took a walk along the canal- one of my favorite running spots.

105_2397

Back at the apartment I got into my birthday outfit and opened presents. My roommates got me this adorable zebra print wine glass from Handpicked and a tiara (which I wore all night). They also presented me my sign with a 21 to-do list.

21st 421st 1

21st 6

I have the best parents in the world. THEY GOT ME A DSLR CAMERA FOR MY BIRTHDAYY! I’ve been wanting a DSLR for a while now, especially to have with me on my study abroad adventures this Fall. I have yet to take it out and start playing with it because the past couple days have been super busy. I will definitely be doing some playing around with it tonight though!

21st 9

The celebrations continued at Pawley’s Front Porch, a restaurant featured on the Food Network and famous for its hamburger creations. I sipped on a Woodchuck cider at the bar while we waited for a table.

21st 14

And then had a “pretty drink” after we were seated called Bubble-Licious. The waiter also brought me out a “purple drink” which my family told me to “chug” and make them proud… ??

21st 18

Shenanigans ensued well into the wee hours of the night and it was a blast. I managed to cross quite a bit off of my to-do list, such as sing karaoke, speak French to strangers, and get on a bar. All in all, an extremely successful 21st birthday!

T minus 9.5 hrs til Palmetto Half Marathon

Today I tried not to dwell on the monstrosity that is about to blow through the state of South Carolina. If it rains, it rains. And if it rains, it’s going to be raining on everyone running the half marathon, not just me. My time for self pity has come and gone and now it’s time to get my game face on. I took today easy and got done some laundry, some grocery shopping, some fro-yo consumption, and picked up my race packet.

image

For a carb-loaded dinner, I cooked up butternut squash ravioli and added marinara sauce, a bit of feta cheese, and fresh oregano & thyme from the garden. To reward myself for my new, more positive perspective, I finished my night with 6 Girl Scout shortbread cookies Smile

092

I laid out all of my gear so that I’m good to go at 5 a.m. when my alarm clock goes off.

094

I’m off to bed now. Wish me luck, and pray to the weather gods for me!
